About the Prajnya 16 Days Campaign

The “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” campaign originated in 1991 as an initiative of the Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers University. Since then, hundreds of organisations worldwide have used the campaign as an organising strategy in order to advocate the elimination of all forms of violence against women.

The campaign spans important observance days:

  • International Day Against Violence against Women (25 November)
  • International Women Human Rights Defenders Day (29 November)
  • World AIDS Day (1 December)
  • International Human Rights Day (10 December).

When? 25 November to 10 December

Where? At multiple locations across Chennai and now reaching out to the world through digital programmes and initiatves

Why? To raise awareness of the different ways in which women in particular are vulnerable to violence, at home, at their place of work, on campuses and in public spaces.

How? Through a broad, inclusive, structural and human rights approach to gender-based violence; by forging partnerships to create a network for action; by involving diverse audiences including educational institutions, corporate groups and civil society organisations; by working with multiple media and programme formats.

The Prajnya 16 Days Campaign Archives

Since 2008, Prajnya has been organising 16 days of outreach and activities, and each of these is copiously documented on the website, blog and Prajnya's social media accounts. We invite you to travel through time and learn about our journey doing this work. Our calendars, our campaign materials are all online through each year's campaign page, preserved more or less as it was then designed.
